The history of mining parallels the history of civilization. It could be realized by many important cultural eras identified by various minerals or their derivatives, such as the Stone Age (prior to 4000 B.C.E.), the Bronze Age (4000 to 5000 B.C.E.), the Iron Age (1500 B.C.E. to 1780 C.E.), the Steel Age (1780 to 1945), and the Nuclear Age (1945 to the present).
Mining might have been the second earliest endeavors of humankind after agriculture. These two industries are categorized together as the basic industries of early civilization, and they are still have got important places in the modern industries.
The extraction of minerals from the earth in order to use in life has been an ancient activity since long before recorded history. Extraction methodologies were changed a little bit until the late 19th century. Given the extreme improvement in the technologies from theories to equipment and the increasing need for minerals consumption, mankind has been able to process huge amount of ores in the recent years.
Nowadays, by the drastic improvements in technology and science in one hand, and the vigorous increasing in the rate of minerals consumption on the other hand, many cutting edge methods for mineral processing have been developed. It is notable that chemicals play a very significant role in extraction of precious metals from ore. For instance, Flotation and Leaching are two innovative processing methods for separating precious minerals locked in waste rock. To increase the efficiency in such mineral processing methods, especially Flotation, several specialty chemicals are applied.

Sodium Hydrosulfide (NaHS) | Sulphide reagents are broadly applied in mineral processing and hydrometallurgical operations. Sodium Hydrosulphide (NaHS) is used in order to separate Molybdenum Sulphide from Copper Sulphide in Flotation process. Sodium Hydrosulphide (NaHS) is also applied to reduce the concentration of residual metals, especially Cadmium, in water treatment. This way is more effective than precipitating metals as hydroxides with lime due to the ability of sulphide to decrease metal concentrations to much lower values. Although solvent extraction through electrowinning is usually preferred especially for copper, NaHS could be applied for precipitation of metals from leach solutions to reach high-grade concentration of metals. SART process (Sulphidization–Acidification–Recycle–Thickening) has been developed in the recent years for gold-copper ores in which NaHS is used to precipitate copper from cyanide leach solutions. | Show More | |
